A Little Note of Thanks

A Little Note of Thanks

Six months of plotting, and it is over. The first New York Fry’s Gig has come and gone! I am immensely proud of what the evening became, and so very honored for all the support I received throughout its various stages from creation to conclusion. I have so many people to thank, and only hope I can find words fitting enough to express my gratitude.

I know we aren’t all online at the same time these days, so if you notice someone mentioned who might like to read this post, please do not hesitate to pass it along.

My most sincere thanks, and oh so much love to:

Samantha Hayhurst for getting me started that one chilly February day in Housing Works Bookstore, for admitting me into the Inner Circle, and never leaving my side throughout. From the occasional transatlantic phonecall to the endless online chatting, you kept me rational and inspired. You never complained whenever I descended into madness; moreover,  you reminded me that there was method in it. I hope you know just how amazing your Fry’s Gig accomplishments truly are.

Edna Fry for being the first to make the oh-so-subtle suggestion of my involvement, for creating (and instigating) this loopy band of merriment, and for all the support you have given me since that first bloody quiz. I owe you many cups of tea, dear. Onwards and upwards.

Russ Sargeant for his immediate unwavering support and enthusiasm for my ideas, for taking care of the technical side of things, for answering my endless daft questions,  for meeting me in New York despite the heat and the rain, and for teaching me that F11 will make my screen go full.

Carrie Wasserman, a sounding board for my planning (or ranting). You were so proactive in assisting me with finding photographers and didn’t complain when I asked you to bombard your friends with invites (two or three times). You are also to blame for getting me to join Twitter, so I know everyone will want to thank you for that!

Javier Morales for his immense talent and  patience. You created a beautiful work of art for our poster, and everyone who saw it was in awe. I love that you were able to figure out the perfect design, being exactly on my wavelength, after one online conversation. You are truly gifted, and it is with true pride that I relish the thought that your creation was papering NYC for all too brief a time.

Maggie Rowe, a dear friend from the early days of my Twitter life, yet I only met you yesterday. You were a voice of reason throughout the process, and completely indispensable on the night. You helped me out by woman-ning the door, distributing flyers, running to Staples on your own volition, and keeping me laughing the entire evening. Not to mention you looked a treat in the Fry’s Gig NYC t-shirt. You saved my sanity!

Jed Cohen, Brian Meece,  and Vlad Vukicevic from RocketHub and all our Fuelers, for getting this event on its feet. Unfortunately you cannot raise money without spending it first, but you helped us get through it smoothly. A worthy project funded by a smart and worthy organization. Thank you for helping creatives!

Our Missing Cat and Raymond from the Netherlands, both of whom were so integral to the inaugural Fry’s Gig. You tried very hard to be a part of the NYC event, and while it wasn’t meant to be, your enthusiasm for what I was doing touched me greatly.

Justin Bellinger for his unbelievable generosity.

Wendy Farrow for her kind donation to our now future auction, and her thoughtful additional gift to me. (I may just make my mother donate a nice sum in lieu of the beautiful artwork having to leave her house.)

Carolyn Anona Scott for not only contributing to our night and performing an indescribably beautiful set, but for taking on emcee duties and being so brilliant in doing so. NYC definitely needs to see more of you! Sorry I didn’t get up on the stage…

Runaway Dorothy, Modern Airs, The Jamies, and ROBBERS for being there and being so keen. I was just green about this sort of thing; I entered into it knowing nothing. You all made it so easy for me to do my job because of your enthusiasm, flexibility, and fine talent. I’ll say it again: I started out feeling a little badly because there was a more intimate crowd than I had hoped, but then quickly realized that if I was feeling any pity, it was for the silly ones who didn’t show, because they missed an amazing night of performances. You all were STELLAR, and I love you.

Gretchen Handloser and Aislinn Hernandez, for capturing our evening on camera and your willingness to join in. Thank you for documenting and helping us create a foundation for future ventures.

Allison Moy Hayhurst, Sam’s representative here on Earth, for being so willing to help out, and for joining us on the night. I hope you enjoyed it!

Robin, Veronica, Philip, Russ, Erin, Lydia, Emma, Simon, Dave, Marisa, Carly, Dawn, Mary, Izzy, and all my Twitter posse, your excitement for what was happening in both the UK and NYC was heartening. Some of you gave me your ideas and input, some of you RT’d like fiends, some simply asked how things were going. I am most grateful that somehow you still stick by me even though I am completely mental and unworthy of your attention. I only wish you could have been there in person, especially those of you on the wrong side of the pond (which means my side). We’ll have to actively attempt to coordinate the next event so that there are more Fry’s fans from the Americas. Most decidedly we shall.

Stephen Fry, for being Stephen. Admittedly we’ve confused enough people into thinking you are directly involved, but dang it, you are. Without you, we couldn’t have gotten your lovely Mrs, and without your appreciation and support of the UK events, eventual global domination would seem less likely. But you’d better clear your calendar for 2011; you’re not allowed to book any engagements until Fry’s Gig has settled on its next date.  And you’re going to write it in your diary…in pen. Just FYI.

Finally, I must thank my family, friends, and the complete strangers who participated in the evening’s festivities. You all supported Housing Works and our amazing musicians, but believe me, they’re not the only ones who benefited from the experience.

xx Nic
